KlugLKW™ Truck Module

Trucks are a vital element in modern transportation and logistics, moving millions of tons of freight, from raw materials to finished goods, to the waste and garbage. These ships of the road have become more complex over the years, increasing the comfort and safety of the driver and increasing the profitability of the haulers.

The technology of trucking is, however, still not much more advanced than 50 years ago. The tractors have been upgraded to be electronic hubs, with comfortable driving and living accommodation - more is to come with that, given the advent of autonomous vehicles that will extend to trucks - though this may be resisted by the professional drivers who may lose their jobs as a result.

The different levels of autonomy classified by the US federal organization, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for cars should also apply to trucks, and reads as follows:

  • Level 0: The driver controls the vehicle at all times
  • Level 1: Individual vehicle controls are automated, for example electronic stability control; automatic braking, etc.
  • Level 2: At least two controls capable of being automated in unison, for example adaptive cruise control with active lane departure warning/control
  • Level 3: The driver can give control of all safety-critical functions fully to the vehicle in certain conditions. The vehicle can sense when conditions require the driver to resume control in a safe and timely manner
  • Level 4: The fully autonomous vehicle - performs all safety-critical functions for the entire trip, with the driver not expected to control the vehicle at any time


Hilti TruckKlugTech does not expect fully autonomous trucks to be mainstream within the next fifty years on the open road, but we do envisage increased level 2 and 3 developments. The KlugLKW™ truck module uses our understanding of connected devices to make solutions that increase the comfort, safety, security and efficiency of a vehicle. This is fed to the driver in an unobtrusive way, allow interaction via the onboard computer interface, mobile device or voice.

Mobile Security

By linking the vehicle EMAH™ to the owner/driver PIM, we can identify whether or not the vehicle is due to be used, and monitor where it is being driven. Keyless systems have been in the headlines recently as thieves have found their weaknesses. Combining our multi-level security with the vehicle systems and tracking protocols, we can minimize the theft and vandalism of and from trucks.

Coupled with the security of the cabin, we also recognized that the goods a vehicle carries is a target for thieves. That same load space can also be used to transport goods that the driver is unaware of, and the rise in people trafficking and other smuggling means that the load, be it on a trailer or as part of the original truck, should be secure at all times. With this in mind, KlugTech has developed the KT-Anti-Theft System™ (KT-ATS™) that provides a locking system for the cargo compartment, that Customs are able to open, but the driver is unable to. Every time it is unlocked, the freight office is notified (and recorded against the vehicle for customs officials).

Reactive Environment

Have you ever driven a long distance and started feeling tired. Of course you should take a break every so often, but you push on. Alternatively, you are in a long line of very slow moving traffic and can't get out despite not really going anywhere! The Mangala Environmental Control™ module monitors the air temperature and quality, the general environment and the driver, it will adjust the temperature to keep the driver comfortable, or uncomfortable - keeping him/her awake until it is safe to stop.


As the vehicle systems are linked to calendars and routes, the system knows why you are travelling, and where you plan to go. Alternative routes are suggested via the GPS navigation system. Advanced warning is also sent of any delays to the people you are meeting or destinations to drop your cargo, keeping everyone informed.

Performance data is also shared with the occupants of the vehicle, so they understand how it is performing; this data also feeds the driver's system, understanding the fuel needs of each driver. If permitted, the system can contact the garage to arrange a repair or service - obviously with the owner's permission.

Power Charge

Modern trucks have a high electrical demand, increased by the desire of passengers to charge mobile devices, or GPS systems, etc. The Kawe Transport Management™ module shuts down wasteful links, and can link to alternative energy capture options such as solar panels and our own Wiatrak Power Generator™ or the Gyrus Vortex Turbine™. Generating power through the engine alone increases fuel consumption in petrol/diesel vehicles, and consumes valuable 'fuel' in electric vehicles - as they start to be introduced.
